Beautiful figurine, sculpture of a lioness, made for De Fenix Pottery, South Africa, 1990s, signed at bottom by the artist CM.
This sculpture is made of raku pottery, decorated with a colorful and abstract pattern that is incised, the whole is glazed. Works by The Phoenix are very collectible, this is a great one to add to or start your collection!
Raku firing is an originally Japanese technique in which the glaze of a piece cracks. First, a sculpture is glazed. Then it is brought to a temperature of about 1000 degrees very quickly. The workpiece is exposed to the outside air. The rapid cooling causes the glaze to crack. Then the workpiece is placed in a sawdust barrel. The sawdust ignites and produces smoke. The smoke migrates into the crackle.
In perfect condition, no cracks, breaks or chips, check the photos for more details!
