Harpenau trained at the Amsterdam Rieteld Academy, after which she attended the Betzaleh Academy in Israel.
In 1986, after she returned from Israel, Patty Harpenau made her breakthrough in the Netherlands as a painter. After working as an artist for ten years, Harpenau decided to focus on meditation, on which she has now published a number of books. Her art has developed from a style similar to neo-Cobra to work that is reminiscent of Pop Art. Various themes were also discussed, but the subject of Harpenau's art was always close to herself and her interests. Her early work is playful, and is about the child in the artist, and about the woman. Later her work became more mature, with themes such as the origins of art and the Dutch landscape.
